Kingston College Drama Studio

This project involved the conversion of the existing 1960s sports hall into a flexible studio theatre for the use by the Colleges’ performing arts department and public performances.

The new space was formed by the insertion of a steel balcony and a technical control room.  The new structure is suspended from the existing roof structure avoiding the need for columns at ground level. The theatre offers seating for 216 in the form of a single row of seats around the balcony and a retractable bleacher seating unit.  The motorised bleacher seating can be easily retracted to allow the entire floor area to be used for teaching.

The theatre was designed to public licensing standards and can be used for public performances.

The conversion was undertaken on a ‘fast track’ programme and was completed on time and within a very tight budget.
