Brunel University Library Extension

Client: Brunel University

Value: £8.1m*

This project involved the refurbishment and four storey extension of the existing library together with the creation of a new pedestrian area as a focal point for campus activities.

There was a strong focus on energy efficiency including natural stack effect ventilation, solar shading, use of reflected light, exposed concrete soffits for thermal mass, minimal external wall areas and high levels of insulation.

The library is designed to provide flexible space and includes:

  • an IT room to improve access to the electronic library

  • an Assistive Technology Centre with special facilities for users with disabilities

  • a 'one-stop' shop for student services

  • group and silent study room

  • café

This is one of several projects undertaken for Brunel University.
